Abandoned

Steve Gerson

stepping from the tree break
the rabbit slung over my shoulder
head down tethered by withered sinew
one red pearl adorning its winter white ruff

a harvested cornfield before me barren to disuse
the shorn stalks now bone shards cracking underfoot
the abandoned house beyond it
paint mottled like age spots sun singed frost blistered

I studied the shack
a skull with vortex windows darkened
the door a splintered maw
wooden slats jagged as gnawed teeth

a cold wind moaned through the marrowless bones
scattering the shed’s memories across the broken field
