Herstory Lesson

Laura Lee

They still
kill witches
today it’s not
drowning or burning
it’s the pulled- by- the -roots
clumps of hair
or squalor
or female voices
that will not be heard
female bodies –
worthless when roots rot.

Look, I see sister
landed in the V
of the dead ash tree,
her broom breaking
her long hair
wrapped
around mouth
around nose.
