When she answered he asked
are your pretty toes painted?
The brake pedal licked her wetly
heel, toe, and arch,
and the rest of the way home
the cell phone purse-lurked
in the darkness beside her
like a side-glance
hitchhiker who might decide
not to get out, after all.

Greg Schmult lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he works as an environmental consultant. His poetry has appeared, or is forthcoming, in Hanging Loose, Iodine, Poetry Quarterly, Spillway, and The Main Street Rag.
